If It Is Worth Doing
….It is worth doing right.
One of the things I have heard said many times by people attempting to teach online business mastery and internet marketing is “Don’t worry about perfection, just get your product out there”. I am pretty sure that many people take this out of context and use it as an excuse to bash out any old crud and inflict it on their potential customers.
A few years ago, when I wrote game reviews for a PC magazine, I had an editor that impressed on me that he saw the act of writing akin to any craft; and one should strive to become an artisan in that craft. Even if you are only writing about garbage. These means no sloppy slap dash writing, no SMS-type abbreviation, and no laziness and above all make sure every word you write is spell checked and grammatically correct.
When writing for others I remember that this is a demonstration of my respect for their sensibilities. No one ever got annoyed at a perfectly written piece of prose. Your customers will automatically file away (either consciously or subconsciously) a glaring error in your spelling or grammar. They will drop you a few notches in their estimation, and if you continually demonstrate your lack of regard for them, will write you off (pun intended) entirely.
There are some things you should not skimp on when communicating with others and the quality of your writing is one of them. If you do not have the skill, then invest in someone who does, it will be worth it.
What I believe internet marketing “gurus” mean by their statement about getting the product out there ASAP is to ensure that action is being taken. Procrastination or a perfectionist nature can delay an otherwise ripe product from going to market. In the real world an editor or agent will be hounding you to get your work finished and in to them, if you are working alone on the internet there may be no one there to hold you accountable.
This is where I am at with my Sphynx Cat ebook. It is about 75% complete and probably one solid day of work will see it complete; now if only someone was poking me with a stick to get it out there
I do have some deadlines I have to meet and after a few thousand words I certainly do not want to abandon what I have accomplished so far. It will happen this month. Promise.
p.s. out for the weekend so no blog posts till Monday
What Are You Good At?
I have been thinking about what I am good at. Using a really awful interpretation of the 80/20 Rule (Pareto Principal) I think I should be super awesome at 20% of the things that I do and 80% of my results will come from those things. To do the very best I can in life I am going to focus on those super awesome things and let the others take care of themselves.
“But” I hear you say “What about being a well rounded person? Improving those bits of you that aren’t super awesome would be a worthwhile pursuit would you not think?”
Not at this point in my life.
You see with my focus (but still not my actions) fairly and squarely on getting out of corporate life, I can’t afford to spin my wheels or spend precious time on things that aren’t going to help me right now.
During the week I watched the YouTube video of Jason Calacanis (Founder of Mahalo) talking about what he sees are the things that make-up an entrepreneur and how they can be interpreted by non-entrepreneurs. Now Jason, while he says he gets plenty of speaking invitations, isn’t really a good speaker. His passion does not translate to what he says, but despite that I still heard what I needed to hear.
I need to get REALLY focussed.
So what is it I do really well?
I can write well, not as well as I used to write, but practice is bringing it all back. I can put words down in such a style that people enjoy reading them. I can have text conversations with their minds and excite their thoughts and imaginations using a keyboard. That’s probably where 80% of my income will come from in one way or another.
I know the internet, social media, communities, forums and how to bring people together. i think I will have a pretty good shot at creating some cool mash-ups by combining what i know and can do in these areas.
I am great at planning, motivating, visualising and documenting processes/procedure and work flows.
The rest of the stuff I am good at …. well that may be a niche market I won’t write about here *wink*
Have you ever considered what you do well?
Sitting down and writing everything you do well is a great self esteem builder. This list is for YOU and no one else so you can be perfectly honest. Every single thing that you are good at can be a marketable/saleable product.
You might be an absolute wizz at cleaning the oven. Don’t dismiss such a valuable skill! How to get Your Oven Spotless :Oven Cleaning for Everyone is just what someone is looking for right this very minute. How to Test a Dodgy Radiator Hose, Dehydrating Fruit For Beginners, Cleaning Greasy Fingernails….Write that list, then add another five things to it each day. Get used to thinking about what you do well and recognising it.
You might be surprised to see that the things you are good at will start popping up everywhere. This is good news and is exactly what is meant to happen. The more you focus on your strengths, the more opportunities will present themselves to use those strengths.
Check it out for the next couple of days and just see what crosses your path.

This Post is Not About the 3g iPhone
This is about some forgotten skills that I have that I am going to brush up on, again, soon. Did you know that I am a qualified NLP practitioner who can raise a shingle as a Life Coach? Did you also know that I have studied and have been awarded certificates in two types of hypnotism? Do you think I am a total nut job now?
Surprisingly I had actually “forgotten” that I have these skills. Many I use instinctually in my daily work life. Building rapport with the people I manage, reading eyes and body language, but I can do more than I currently am.
I am a pretty pragmatic person. If something works for someone, then good for them, I am not going to say it doesn’t work, nor ridicule them for believing so. Stranger things have happened …
About two years ago as an exercise in one of the classes I attended, I self hypnotised and gave myself the suggestion that cheese and onion crisps, my absolutely favourite nasty food, were huge yellow dried scabs. I have not eaten cheese and onion chips since…. actually I have not eaten any other form of crisp either. Just thinking about them makes me slightly nauseous. Before I did this to myself I was pretty skeptical that this sort of thing worked, and if it did work, that it work on me.
I saw in my Twitter feed that someone claiming to be Frank Kern had linked to a NLP site talking about how to write to focus on various parts of a sentence and suddenly my light bulb went on…that’s right… I lent my books to a friend over a year ago (Paul I am coming for them!) and they have not been returned, and they are important…right now. I don’t know why but they are.
Weird post I know…goes nowhere really…
