Getting It Wrong? – Telcos and iPhone Data Plans
What could the world’s telcos know that their consumer base doesn’t, that would make many set data plans at such a horribly expensive levels.
When midnight 2000 rolled around, the biggest issue that was caused was that everyone picked up their phone to “test” whether the network was still working. Maybe telcos are protecting their 3G networks from certain meltdown, by making data so expensive that people will not be tempted to all test at the same time. A lame excuse, but possibly someone’s fiendish mitigation plan.
More likely is a total misunderstanding of who their market is and what they want the iPhone for.
Do the telcos believe that the average 3g iPhone purchaser is someone who does not use data services, or if they do, use such minuscule amounts that a large plan is not required. Australian telcos (direct conversation with a a Telstra representative gave me that chectnut) are using that rhetoric when explaining away the lack of chunky data.
But look what studies of iPhone usage in the USA actually say.
iSuppli study clearly shows that iPhone users, use the data capabilities way and above what other internet capable phone users do.
So maybe the telcos DO know their market and are out to gouge them as hard as possible. After all this is the first iPhone in many countries and so the early adopters have NOTHING similar yet. While bloggers in the USA are saying this might be the iPhone model they will skip, their international friends could not contemplate such a move…..but at this stage I just might!
Well for a few months anyway….

The “I Haven’t Made Up My Mind About The Thirty Day Challenge” – Competition
My little countdown widget beside the blog posts told me today was 22 days (22 hours and 22 minutes) to the beginning of the Thirty Day Challenge and it crossed my mind that there must be people out there that have not signed up to be part of the challenge yet. Hmm what can I do to help them decide?
Maybe they are worried it is a scam, maybe they think they will not have the skills or the time to get involved. Whatever the reason, I am here to assure you that there is no selling, no previous skills required and minimal time needed (the challenge is actually open ended…the information will be there after the 30 days… for a whole year at least).
I am thinking that if you have not signed up now you might need a little sweetener to do so. Something that will get you to enter your name and email. Something that will be useful to you after you have completed the Thirty Day Challenge. Something that could potentially earn you cash when you know what to do with it.
Some background on the prize -
Dan Raine (mischief maker and all round awesome internet marketing dude) was playing around after one of the Justin.TV shows Ed Dale had done to test how best to present this years 30DC . There was a small audience of hardcore fans (like myself) that was enjoying the banter (yay Team After-Party!). It was all very intimate and fun as I recall.
Anyway Dan loves to get a little tricksy with things that he gives away. So randomly, Dan tossed out a small number of keyword searches that he had picked up as being potential business starters. Now Dan doesn’t chuck around rubbish and I know he is the “real deal” when it comes to making money online. Seeing the opportunity I registered a couple of the .com domains for those keyword searches as they came up.
And it is one of those expertly chosen keyword search domains plus six month’s hosting with my host Servage* that I will be giving away to the winner. This will be a real asset when you have finished the Thirty Day Challenge, even if you do nothing and just sell it.
So how do you enter.
Well it’s really simple. If you have NOT signed up for this year’s 30DC then
a) Clean your cookies from your browser
b) Click on my Thirty Day Challenge affiliate link
c) Sign up!
d) Pop a comment in the comments section here that you have done the above
e) Cross Fingers!
I will be announcing the winner on August 1st 2008, so make sure you get in early so you don’t forget!
If you have ALREADY signed up for the Thirty Day Challenge do not worry, if you send my link to someone and want to walk them through the above process and then pop your name in below when they are all signed up that is cool too.
To all entrants please remember to put the comment in as soon as you sign up so I can check it against my dashboard numbers
Any questions? Leave them in a comment and GOOD LUCK!
* Servage offer unlimited domain support with unlimited email accounts with auto install for most of the popular applications such as WordPress plus much much more.

Kerri: Hi, how may I help you with your enquiry today?
you: Hi Kerri
Kerri: Hi, how may I help you today?
you: I currently have a NextG plan and am interested in getting the iPhone on friday and signed up on the page….I have not had any email back from telstra or any contact
you: Will I be contacted?
you: (i bet you are getting a million questions like this today)
Kerri: I can you send you a link to pre-register for the iphone, at this stage, I only have the launch date of July 11 at selected Telstra shops (I do not have details on which ones). It is expected that livechat will be able to provide the handset from July 22nd or earlier if stock arrives sooner. I would be happy to give you the link to pre-register though if you would like?
you: I did pre register for the telstra one… I thought
you: so teh Telstra pre-register page does not mean that there will be a phone for me at my local telstra store?
Kerri: then I am sure you will be contacted when more information becomes available
you: OK. Are teh data pans that existed before the iPhone the only data plans taht will be availble?
Kerri: I don’t have details of the iphone plans at this time, but the existing data packs should be available for the iphone
you: You guys must be ander a lot of pressure with no information and everyone wanting to know ![]()
you: Oh well I will wait and see… Thanks
Kerri: I hope you have enjoyed using this Live Chat service. Please feel free to use this service again in the future for any Mobile, Internet or Fixed line enquires. Have A Great Day.

Extremely frustrating service… have people who know nothing answering your queries. I am not sure what i would prefer, a web page with a countdown clock and a notation NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AVAILABLE… or this crap. Somehow talking to a real person who is ignorant of what their company is doing is much worse.

Just When It All Seems Too Much
I would never compare myself to John Stephen Akhwari but I understand his need to keep going to the bitter end, no matter what the pain, no matter whether there is anyone there to see you finish, no matter what obstacles are in front of you.
The work I do as I push on with my projects is not heroic and no one will be telling inspirational stories about it (apart from me, to my grandkids one day, maybe) and there are thousands doing the same out there. Plodding along when they just want to stop, when they can give themselves every reason to just lay down and let everything go.
Some do stop of course, and curse themselves later that they fell behind.
Some stop with great excuses and never start again, because they have “a good reason”.
Some though (like me at the moment), might slow to a walk, putting one foot in front of the other, very very slowly, but they are still moving forward.
John Stephen Akhwari has always been my hero, from the time my father told me about him when I was a small child. Every sports program over the years that would show his journey of pain and triumph would inspire me to never ever quit.
Even now, 35+ years later, when I watch this footage I am reduced to sobbing and a feeling of such humility. It is easy to lay down and make excuses, but easy is rarely the way to success.
