Linkbaiting* Makes Me Sick
Back when I owned an antique and second-hand furniture business I would put various pieces of furniture out the front of the shop on the footpath so the passing main road traffic would see it (and hopefully would drop in to buy). Without measuring the results I had no way of telling if it worked well, not so well, or not at all.
So I went down to a local post-Christmas auction and purchased a 7 foot high stuffed Christmas elf. You could not help but see this thing. It had those funky stripey tights, green pointy shoes and hat with bells on, and it was HUGE.
Each day I would arrange the elf in some pose on the furniture out the front. One day he would be relaxing in an old oak rocking chair, another reclining on a beautiful brass bed, and well he did spend a day sitting on a 200 year old commode, but let’s not dwell too much on that. Still I had no idea whether my attention grabbing elf was actually working as a sales tool.
Until one terrible day when a car pulled up out the front of the shop, a couple of masked guys jumped out and bundled the elf into the car and drove off. My first thought was “Sheesh people will steal anything these days”, and my second thought was “I want my elf back”.
There was no point going to the police, the elf had cost about $50 and I wasn’t going to waste their time with trivialities. I wracked my mind, what could I do… posters on poles? Signs in windows? I couldn’t really spend the time away from the shop and it seemed a lot of effort. So I drafted a press release and faxed it to my local newspaper.
It read
For immediate release:
Have You Seen Elfis?
Elfis the 7ft high Christmas elf that can usually be seen in front of the Absolutely Fabulous Antiques shop in the main street has been kidnapped….
I went on to describe the events and thought that if anything it would be some free publicity even if I did not get the elf back (oh the Elfis name came to me at the spur of the moment, it really had not had a name up until then). Without meaning to, I opened a floodgate of publicity with one fax.
A few hours later I was being interviewed on local radio, calls started coming in from news wire services. I got a call from Reuters! The story went round the globe (and this was before the internet was big, so this was a HUGE thing) . I got a call from an Irish newspaper asking me if the elf was made of concrete!
The story had an enormous effect, I had people call me who said they had seen the elf after it was stolen. A security guard said he had followed a car with a giant elf in it two days after the kidnapping, others rang to see whether he had been found.
About a week after the event I was pretty much sure that the elf was gone for good when I took a call from a middle-aged man. He sounded painfully embarrassed, but he had the elf and wanted to return it. I was happy to have the elf back and asked him to drop it round.
Long story short, his university student son and friends had thought the prank of stealing the elf would be fun, but they had not thought about the consequences or really about what to DO with a 7ft giant elf when you have it. Giant elves are pretty hard to hide. So Dad returned the elf and I hope the son copped a good allowance cutting off.
Did I let it rest there? Well no I sent another press release announcing his return. Photos of the joyful reunion between me and Elfis were taken and the papers had another good news story.
So what has this got to do with modern internet site link-baiting? Everything!
The current rash of link-baiting gets stuck somewhere up my left nostril. By link-baiting I mean the concocted stories that draw attention like flies to a piece of manure, not the top 10 lists or other common type of posting. It’s not the fact that people are clever with their stories (though the current Big Foot one is a stinker), or that it usually attracts people to rubber neck like so many mouth breathers. It is the fact that every link bait story takes a little bit of the mojo of the internet away.
I love the fact I can get information that is interesting, challenging and straight from the horses mouth. I like that I DON’T have to cynically doubt every single story as fiction as soon as I read it. I liked being able to browse on the internet and actually find right answers for what I wanted to know.
Notice the change in tense there from like to liked? Like Tinkerbell, if I don’t believe in the internet, it will die.
/rant
I am sure if you have read this far you will be thinking “Time to grow up Allison, everything changes”. Yep I agree, and I am sure that I too will use some form of link-baiting in the future, I’ll try and make sure though that it isn’t worthless crap and doesn’t leave me or the reader with a bad taste in my mouth.
Link-baiting is not to create long term traffic on the back of the story, it is used to bump an unknown website up through its competitors search engine listings by having many sites link to it. It does not create value. It does not even help your brand (example read Made To Stick about the Pink drum playing rabbit). It won’t create sales unless there is a coincidence that the undirected traffic is impulsively buying, or they wanted it already, which means your marketing sucks in the first place. It is a means to an ends, at the detriment of our beliefs.
*but it still works

Traffic Android
Name:Traffic Android
Media: Stand alone application (windows)
Author: Nathan Ridley
Before you Mac users start running from the hills, I know you all can run windows programs through various means and this application is one you really should be running. Read on if you are serious about making your social bookmarking a million time easier .
Social bookmarking has become an essential part of any good website creation procedure. An absolute must-do if you want your site to be picked up quickly by search engines and to start traffic rolling in. Because I am an absolute stickler for quality content creation I am going to assume you are too, and that you are proud to get your work out there for someone to see. I never bookmark crap nor should you.
There have been a few ways to do your social bookmarking up till now
- you can go to the websites yourself and manually enter in all the details one by one
- you can go to web based sites that will go through all of the sites, log you in and you still manually enter information
- you can outsource to a stranger and trust them to do it (and NOT use your log in details elsewhere)
All really time consuming, brain sapping solutions to an essential part of your business.
Then along comes Traffic Androidand BLAMMO! all I can say is hallelujah do I love automation.
You can see from the screenshot I did some pretty heavy duty testing before letting it loose on real sites. I wanted to ensure there was no damage to the account doing the bookmarking, or the sites being bookmarked. I obviously wouldn’t be writing this review if things went pear shaped now would I?
The thing that sets Traffic Androidapart form websites and outsourcing is the ability to schedule WHEN your sites are bookmarked. Traffic Android can be set up to a full 7 days in advance, which means that Google ‘disappearing act” you just know is coming for your new site can be bookmarked all the way through and pop back bigger and better than ever.
If a bookmark didn’t take you can review at any time via the tool and set it to run automatically again at a later time, or hit the immediate execute and complete. All that frustration of when a social bookmarking site is playing silly buggers is removed, no need to try and remember which site you did and which site you didn’t already do.
In short the money you spend on Traffic Android will be recouped in super fast time just in the hours you save fiddling around manually submitting (or paying some stranger to do). And real businesses use real business tools like these, real business owners will be using this to cut the costs as soon as they can get their hands on it.

Oh It’s True, It’s True
Been watching my tweets today? No? Well if you did you would have seen that I decided to do a speed run at doing the Thirty Day Challenge up to now in one day. If I am too slack to post each day, well i can do 12 days in one and post about it.
You might think something like “She’s a witch! Burn Her!!”, or that I am insane, or both. Hard to tell at the moment with all of the cough medicine I have been taking. Still it might seem a big deal to some people to try such lunacy but if you have a procedure you can do anything 10 time quicker than flailing around in the dark.
For 8 years I worked for IBM and in that time I wrote dozens of procedures. I wrote them for people who had no idea what they were doing, I wrote them for highly technical people, I wrote them for managers and I wrote them for people for whom English was a second language. Procedures rock, and this is coming from someone who gets off on chaos.
The Thirty Day Challenge lays out the steps so clearly and simply that once you have done it once, you can easily replicate again. Now I don’t expect a new person to all of this to be able to do what I did in one day, but you can definitely chop in half the time it took the first time, and the time after that probably halve again.
So what did I achieve?
7am started research using Market Samurai. I picked a high end market and drilled down to a three word micro niche. Seriously with this tool you can pick ANY word and find a niche waiting for picking. That is just what i did, picked a word out of the air that I knew would like writing about. Simple.
Stats: Searches 2433/SEOT 1021 SEOC < 50k cheated a little because I know I can OCI 96%
Speed Niche Before
The SEO page shows a lot of big name sites that you would probably know that sell or link to a page selling the physical item or a variation of it. The parts of this table I personally thing are important are the BLP (which the competition is sorely lacking in) and the BLEG (again lacking). The on page SEO title, URL etc I can kill easily having a blog set up, rather than an eCommerce site.
7:30am I bought the domain name. Now this might interest you, or it may not, but when I have a niche term that ends in an S (Market Samurai will tell which term is searched for more) naturally say like British Bulldogs I will buy a domain that goes like this www.britishbulldogsite.com . See what i did there? BOTH search terms british-bulldog and british-bulldogs are in the domain name. Google will usually be able to figure out plurals but I like to make absolutely sure that I am SEO ready for anywhere
8 am Dropped kids to bus stop while DNS resolved and returned to write content and eat breakfast
8:30am Blog is up using WordPress Direct dead easy (though they still need to work on cleaning the crap out of their templates)
9 am starting sourcing affiliates from Share-a-Sale who I use for my affiliate testing stuff (and a couple of sites that sell pretty well). Like i said, this niche is a physical product and there were a few good affiliate deals that pay 10% or more on pretty high ticket items.
10 am Affiliate pretties added, site proof read again (to be sure, to be sure) and then the bookmarking began. I manually used Digg, which I have to admit is something i would NOT normally do, good content will mean that people will do this for you, but this was for speed … erk ends justifying the means was never my strong point, must pay back my social networking karma on that one . I also fired up Traffic Android (wait for tomorrow on that one *wink) and went to town.
11am BOOYAH!! Site is ranked 5 in broad match (I don’t really care about exact match because I look at #1 broad as THE goal). That’s the site, not any of the social bookmarks. so 4 hours from NOTHING to a top 5 raking. Shit hot stuff!
12 noon broke for lunch.
1pm Site moves to 4th in Google. I write more content and post a second story. Set off Traffic Android to bookmark second page in a couple of hours.
2pm Nap time…yep still sick and rest and fluids are important
4pm Wake up and check site. Ranking is now 3 for domain name and 5 for first post awesome!
5pm read more stuff for content, spend some quality time with family and order dinner
6pm Write this blog post before going to create Squidoo page and Hub Page.
7pm Up to date with the Thirty day Challenge and have a site already dominating the search term in 12 hours.
Not a bad day all in all. Yep, the goal is still the same with this one. Get it earning cash and then flog it off… which reminds me about a little thing i pointed out to my 30DC team mates about Market Samurai… but I will leave that post for another day.

Happiness is a Warm Bum
Today I took a sick day and yes I was actually sick.
It does happen that a simple infection can lay me low and that can be depressing in itself. Yet I am smiling as I sit here writing, even if physically I am feeling…well a little rusty.
I was feeling a bit like this two weeks ago when there was a get together in the city to meet other people who are taking the Thirty Day Challenge. I didn’t really want to go and so had not committed right up until that day. I mean there was the blinding-light-loved personality of the 30DC forums Caro, and people who wanted to meet Caro. Yet i went and resolved to keep my eyes and ears open for the lessons there are everywhere to learn.
Which is why I was silent when the conversation turned to what would you do if you had all the money you wanted. One person declared a cruise ship with private helicopter, another a private plane, personal chefs and masseuses were loudly approved by many of the participants. There were islands and snowfields, mansions and comforts of every shape and size.
I sat and I listened and was quietly amazed.
You see.. I am doing exactly what i would do if I had all the money I needed.
I have my property in the bush and i will build my dream home.
I would be working my internet business and my side projects.
I would read and write.
I would be just as I am, and where I am heading.
Knowing that keeps me warm inside, keeps me smiling through a great deal of unpleasantness that could be distracting.
