18 years ago today

I was wheeled into a room to have a spinal block anesthesia inserted so I could be awake to see the birth of my daughter by c-section.  This was going to be a better birth for me that my son’s. For him I was in labor for 60 hours and finally had a ceasarean when he became distressed. So there I was on the trolley..waiting.

My at-the-time-husband had gone on ahead into the operating room and was waiting for me. All gowns and smiles, this was going to be a piece of cake for him, though there would be no hot and cold running nurses and baked dinners while he watched me labor, not like last time.  I never wanted to know what the sex of our babies were before they were born, my motto was “there are precious few surprises on the day”.  In both deliveries I was dead wrong about the lack of  surprises.

“Roll over facing away from me and draw your knees up” the anesthesiologist ordered. I did as instructed. While he washed my back with iodine he explained he was going to just give an injection into the spine as this was to be a “wide awake” ceasarean and not an epidural, which was almost the same thing but they left a tube connected to a catheter so the paralytic could be topped up if needed. Being my usual compliant self I nodded understanding and said “yes” and “ok” a lot.

First was the pinprick of the numbing local anaesthetic to dull the pain of the needle to go into my spine. “OK you may feel a little discomfort and pressure” and I steeled myself for the pain that you know is coming whenever a doctor says “little discomfort”. There was pain, but immediately there was something else.

In the blink of an eye I couldn’t breath.  One second I was fine but in pain, the next I was trying to gasp like a fish. A nurse rushed over and looked at my blood pressure, she shouts “she’s flat!!!” . The anesthesiologist grabs a catheter and shoves it in the back of one hand and hooks a bag of saline to it, and repeats with the other arm. The nurse is shouting numbers.

My brain totally disconnected from what was happening. It wasn’t an out of body experience, it was detachment from the events. I was still seeing with my eyes and hearing with my ears, but the struggle was no longer stressful.  One single thought came into my head “I am going to die”.  I didn’t struggle, I didn’t think of what was involved in dying, or what would come after for those left behind, I just gave up…immediately. I am still haunted by that lack of …fight.

Next thing I was head down on a tilted table, the doctor had a bag of saline under each armpit and was squeezing hard to get the fluids in. The room came rushing back and suddenly I was normal again.

“Ready to have a baby?” the doctor asked. Just like that, like nothing had just happened.

They wheeled me into the operating room and no-one noticed or said anything. It was our secret.

I was slid onto the operating table and my arms strapped out on boards like I was being crucified. “That’s to stop you trying to put your hands inside yourself” and voice laughed “Yeah we don’t need any ‘extra’ help”. They arranged all of the sheets and and a screen to hide the carnage my abdomen was about to go through.  The doctor asked whether I had any questions..

“Umm, are my legs laying flat?” .  My brain hadn’t disconnected from the fact that they were flat after being drawn up when i was paralysed. I totally understand phantom limbs because the whole time they doctors were rummaging around inside of my I was convinced I was laying in a very unladylike position.

They told me it was time to start and that I would be kept in the loop with what was happening, and that it would all be over very quickly.

“Can I watch?”

They explained to me they would give me a peek, but that it wasn’t a good idea to watch. “It can affect some people badly”.  So I had a quick look at my insides and would have loved to watch the whole thing but the curtain was raised again.  Within a few minutes the doctor announced “You will feel some pressure now, we need to squeeze the baby out of the incision”. In my mind I appended “like a huge pimple”.

As soon as they pulled her free from my body I started crying. “It’s a girl!”  they brought her up to my face and she dripped some blood and guts on me but I didn’t care. She was beautiful, wrinkled and mottled like a German sausage, perfect.

Happy Birthday Kelsie, Mummy loves you!

Mature Early Adopters Unite

It is confirmed that Apple are releasing something on January 27th. The carefully leaked information would point to the fabled Apple Tablet being released into the wild to gallop free, trampling all before it. While I consider myself an early adopter, I do have a set of rules I play to. I buy what I think is going to be useful to me, rather than what is a funky thing to have.

Let me say up front I am NOT an Apple fangrrl, nor ever have been, but when the iPhone was released in Australia I stood in line at 4am to buy. Not because I wanted to be the first on the block (well maybe a little) but because I really wanted a hand held computing device that would suit my need to be connected at all times and not “really” be a mobile phone. I was never a 3 month changer of phone kit, but I did upgrade the components of my PCs on a regular basis. I have been on cable broadband since it was released in Australia and on the internet since, well since there was videotex. So if I am painting the picture clearly here, I early adopt what I need, but leave the toys for later.

So the Apple tablet, do I need it…welllll no. Would I like one? Hell yes. Am I going to pay for one this round? Nope.  I will probably salivate over the people who will be at Ed Dale’s 30DC Home 2 conference that will have one. I am sure Ed will be flashing his about,  but I will be strong.

Just For Fun

Been flogging myself doing stuff in the back room for the last weeks and I need a fun project I can set to break the tension. I have decided to do a flip experiment.

Here are the rules -

  • Maximum $50 spend
  • must triple money
  • have 48 hours from domain transfer till putting it on auction for sale

Crazy! I know, but fun, fun fun.

Let’s see how I go

Play With Fire – Get Burnt

If there is one thing that people really, really dislike (especially on the internet) is to trust someone and then be betrayed. Humans will accept mistakes, bad judgement, and ill worded opinions, but they will not tolerate being sucked into believing something and then find out they have been totally conned.

Thus is the case with Chris Reynolds who believed that the product he was selling was above board, effective and successful. After all the creator Ashley Morgan had marketed it as such, and also marketed himself as “not like those other guys”. Alas that all came tumbling down when Chris realised he had been deceived by lies and that Ashley Morgan was actually worse than just a scammer, he would also chase his detractors with fake accounts and harass them to stop any negative feedback. Isn’t that stalking?

Anyway we can only hope that more affiliates stand up when they are selling a crap product and declare they are as mad as hell and they are not going to take it any more. I have always been a big advocate of self responsibility and industry self regulation.  I hope other affiliates of this Twitter spam product also have the integrity to call out what has gone on.

Chris’ blog post today tells it like it is and marks the death knell for the Twitter spam product, Genesis Rocket.

Anatomy of an Internet Troll

troll

Do NOT feed the trolls

Firstly, by posting this I am absolutely doing the WRONG THING and I really am indulging a small pleasure by “fighting on the internet”. If this happens to you, remember hypocrite Allison and do NOT feed the trolls, do not engage, hit the spam button and ban the user.

The Story so far

You may remember recently a bit of hooha when I took apart a product that I had bought as part of a review. I pointed out the good and the bad, and warned people that some of what was being recommended went against the Twitter Terms of Service (TOS).  That product is no more, as it also violated Twitter trademarks and was blacklisted as spam by Twitter. People promoting the product were suspended or banned from Twitter.

Now behind the scenes (and sometimes in front) were some very strange events.  Firstly was the appearance of troll, though in internet terms it’s not truly a troll, but close enough for me to use that term. Like most trolls this troll is not too smart,  trolls feed on conflict and focus on that rather than being clever about how they create that conflict.

Ignorant Troll?

Our troll, and I feel like giving it an affectionate pat on its stupid head, first started posting its vitriol from a single IP address under various names. I guess the average internet user would not be too familiar with how IP addressing works, but different names/same IP within a short period of time is a dead giveaway someone is playing silly buggers.

A tip for the wise out there *taps nose*, use an online DNS Lookup service to see what ISP the troll is using. Our troll was using a TV based broadband service provided by the UK ISP Tiscali. A piddly tiny ISP that stood out like hat-pegs when the troll started also posting abusive comments on other blogs owned by  SWBN members. Easily fixed though with a report to their ISP and banning the entire ISP IP range from the blogs, no nonsense, go straight to jail, do not collect $200 (Monopoly game reference for anyone who didn’t understand that last bit).

Return of the troll

Things were quiet for a while until today, when “hello!” our troll popped back up, but with a new ISP… or should I say, using their other ISP. You see I noticed at the time our Tiscali troll was hanging around, there was a lurker reading comments but not commenting. You do notice these things when the same IP addresses are checking your blog 20-30 times a day. It was a Virgin IP address. So how do I know it’s the same troll? Because they are up to their same tricks, different name, same IP (see below). The internet is a huge place, and the chances of attracting two trolls from the same country posting in the same voice is about zero to none.

The nice thing about large ISPs is that they have abuse report facilities, if your troll is from an ISP with one of those then make sure you use it. Report every occurrence singly, and make sure you take screen shots of the offending comments.

Things get a little freaky

Remember the zero to none bit about our troll being a different person? Well that also fits in with what I had put together back when the Tiscali troll was posting and the Virgin account was watching. You see the catalyst for all of this was the product I reviewed, a product created by someone who supposedly never got involved with people who were negative against their product (an obvious lie when frivolous DMCA takedowns -legally sworn documents – were submitted by them). The troll and their cohorts at the time repeatedly posted comments to that effect, which is why , at the time, I pegged the Virgin lurker as the author of the Twitter product. Do you see where this is going?

Why would I link a deranged troll with the product author? To understand that is to have knowledge of one of the “backstory” events that I never made public (until now).

After it was made clear to the product author that they had no legal leg to stand on and that legal action was going to be taken that would have unfavourable consequences for them, they rescinded the DMCA claims. At that time I thought all was over, done and dusted; I was ready to move on and forget the whole thing.

The next day bought a whole new bag of crazy to the party.

Things get a lot freaky

It had become quite clear that whoever had been posting the trolling comments had some form of mental problem.  When I realised that, I stopped responding to their comments, removed all responses from them, and my angry friends who couldn’t believe the crap they were spouting, and banned them from the blog(s). Up until that time, even though other people were pointing out the connection between the Twitter product author and our deranged troll, I was unconvinced. The emails I received from the Twitter author, while emotionally manipulative, didn’t have the tang of insanity like our troll.

The email I received from the Twitter product author the day after their DMCA retraction changed all that.

The email said that overnight, their (the Twitter product author’s) car had been vandalised. Tyres slashed, windows smashed…. and the kicker…. painted along the side “don’t mess with the SWBN”….in pink paint no less.

I am sure your reaction is the same as mine was “WTF?!”

Warning, Warning!

Yep, alarm bells were clanging loud and clear in my head. The Twitter product author was clearly our friend the troll. I advised the author to go to the police and report it, which of course he refused to do saying that would mean “we had won”. I then advised them I was breaking off all communication and I placed their email address on my black list. One thing about trolls though, they hate being ignored, even worse they hate when communication is denied them. They always come back to the scene of the crime and that is where it all comes together with the Tiscali troll = twitter product author.

Now you know that, you can also factor in the machinations of the Twitter product author attempting to blame his Twitter accounts being banned on a young English pop star who he was also engaged in his shenanigans with. When he posted a fabricated email from her record company she called him out and he realised he was playing for higher stakes than just a court case with a woman on the internet. He removed his offending posts and comments quick smart.

Look there are other circumstantial things that point to this person being one and the same, and I am not the first to point them out. One huge giveaway is the naming convention this person uses. They just can’t help themselves trying to be “clever” with the naming (as mentioned in the last link). Dale Edwards? Avon Blake? Hannah Solo? Ashley Morgan? come on…This would all make a great movie (yes reality can be stranger than fiction!)  if it wasn’t so worrisome that this person does have a mental condition, and is a dangerous manipulator.

The end?

So that ends this tale (probably not), I do feel dirty in posting it, but also relieved too. I hope that the other people out there that have been harassed by this person know that they are not alone and that the stuff they say and do is part of their illness. Research shows that events like these are not unusual in the Twitter product author’s interaction with others. We should show compassion and pity this person, but never forget to look after yourself first.

FTC Declaration

After the announcement today that the FTC will require specific behaviour from American bloggers and Internet Marketers there will be a lot of declaration going on to make sure people are compliant before the December 1, 2009 deadline.

This blog of mine probably doesn’t come under FTC jurisdiction seeing as I am a British Subject living in Australia writing on a blog that is hosted in Europe. There are a lot of people asking out there whether they need to comply as they aren’t American, but their blog is hosted in America. They have American readers or customers, or American suppliers. There’s a lot to be explained by FTC lawyer types to non-Americans (don’t take anything I say as professional advice… or anyone else for that matter unless you are paying them for legal advice).

Even though I am pretty sure I don’t have to make a declaration, I still am going to. I believe in cleaning up the internet sales and marketing business, and while I know this FTC ruling will be used by numb-nuts like the twat who filed a DMCA copyright against the SWBN blog, in the long run I prefer the jerks out of the business that poison it for everyone.

Here goes

My blog contains affiliate links (SWBN owned) to Market Samurai which I was given a free copy as a beta tester. Keep that in mind when I tell you that Market Samurai is awesome (which it is :) )

My blog contains links to the Immediate Edge, a membership site I receive in exchange for blog moderation of the Thirty Day Challenge. Keep that in mind when you click on the affiliate link to the Immediate Edge, read my annual Immediate Edge review first.

I DOFOLLOW You

Today I turned comments in this blog to Do-Follow because I want to encourage people to leave comments. Simple as that really. Dofollow is the gift that keeps on giving, and slowly bloggers are coming to realise this and releasing their tight grasp on controlling where their link juice goes.

If none of this means anything to you, fear not. In a nutshell – it’s a good thing for your blog if you leave your blog details in the ID part of the comment section.

Of course there are always peanuts out there who will want to game what is going on and leave stupid things like “nice post” . Those comments will not be approved, creativity does not come from crapping on other people’s blogs. I am sure not going to reward it.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Frivolous DMCA : The Cyber Bully’s Friend

This post is not intended as legal advice. (Never take legal advice from a blog! Contact a lawyer/solicitor if you need legal advice)

Had plenty of people contact me asking how on earth can a site be taken down when it has not done anything wrong. Here’s some sobering news for anyone that owns a domain hosted in countries that recognise the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, your site can be taken down by anyone who is willing to sign a DMCA complaint, swearing they are the copyright owner. That’s right, anyone who is willing to perjure themselves can take your site down.

If your site has a frivolous DCMA complaint made against it, the next step for you is to lodge a counter-DMCA with your host. This document has you swear, again under the threat of perjury, that you own the copyright of the reported content. This then removes any liability your host may have in willingly hosting disputed copyrighted material. The original complainant needs to move the complaint to the civil courts (or criminal court if there is a large amount of money at stake), of course if their complaint is frivolous, you can then sue them for causing you damage (especially financial damage).

This is where it gets really messy. Some hosts will uphold the request of the complainant to keep the site suspended for 10-14 days even if the counter DMCA is lodged, to give the original complainant time to lodge their legal stuff. Even if they don’t have a leg to stand on.

If you attract the attention of a cyber bully, who is willing to perjure themselves, then engage a solicitor immediately. This  may seem heavy-handed but being “nice” is not going to change their behaviour towards you. Bullies, in general, do not expect people to stand up to them and rely on the fear that taking legal action is expensive. If you are in the right then all of that expense will be awarded as costs to you in the judgment anyway; to the complainant goes some form of punishment and the obligation to pay restitution. That’s if it even goes that far, their lawyers will recommend they settle ASAP to reduce the costs against them should it go to court.

As I write this I am moving the Secret Women’s Business Network (SWBN) site to a new host, as well as my other domains that have been affected by the frivolous DMCA. I have contacted the host in advance and warned them that there is an issue with frivolous DMCAs being lodged against it and have lodged a counter DMCA with their records, pre-empting what will surely be an attempt by this person again to interfere with my business. I am also discussing the issue with a solicitor firm (having an engaged social network is a wonderful thing! If you have real followers they will offer help; unasked!) and will be issuing instructions against the offending parties as soon as possible.

Again, if you are attacked by a cyber bully, protect yourself and your reputation by taking immediate action.

Just For Me

Between Christmas 2008 and New Year’s day 2009 my partner and I stayed in our bush house. During that time the weather was hot and the summer evening storms were magnificent. The one in this video lasted for over 45 minutes far to our north. I recorded 30 minues of it onto my Flip MinoHD just to see whether anything useful would come of it.

When I played it back I knew I wanted to put some of the storm to music, and finally I have.

This is a random 7 minute excerpt from the storm. I could have tried to do something fancy with having the lightning synch with the music, but I like it how it is…dramatic, awe inspiring, and memory invoking.

Imagine yourself sitting outside with the sound of night insects, it’s hot but not too hot. There is no sound from the far off storm, just the flashes that sometimes had touches of colour. The storm clouds go thousands of feet into the sky, and as far as you look from north-west to north-east the sky is flashing.

Enjoy.
