Just Keep Swimming

One thing you need to run an internet business is occasional access to…the internet. Alas that was sorely missing on my almost week away, with a massive degradation in wireless signal reducing access to less than dial-up speeds.  Rather than get pissy about the whole thing, I spent the time thinking through how I could further increase my offerings to the Sphynx Cat world.

I soft launched another part of the Sphynx Cat Network that went quite well and has opened the door to several other opportunities. It is possible, though still not banking entirely on it, that there’s enough of a market to maybe, just maybe, earn some money from it.

We shall see.

Setting Up A Business In A Weekend

A long weekend that is.

A stray comment from Kim McGuiness (managing director of Network Central) at a networking lunch this week has prompted me to try a little experiment. Kim was talking about how she sees me on Twitter  doing my Twitter thing and how “good” I seem at using it to communicate and network.

That started me thinking about how long I have been communicating on the internet. I was more than shocked to realise it’s …*ahem*… over 20 years!   I have definitely put in my 10,000 hours and can claim my expert badge in the field. But how to make a business out of something that comes as second nature to me?

The plan is to see if I can get the business up and a customer signed up before I head back to work next Thursday. Oh and I will be working from our place in the bush which has it’s own set of challenges.

Can it be done? Let’s see!

Choked (Part 2)

Yesterday I left you wondering what could possibly go wrong with my blog’s Google Page rank when I hadn’t touched the blog in any way at all in over six months.  I gave a huge clue in the post because the issue isn’t about the drop in Google Page rank at all, though it is a symptom of the problem.

The real pointer was the “only 1 page indexed” statement. How does a blog that has been around in the same format for 6 months at least, end up with only 1 page indexed?

Here’s what happened and it could happen to you too if you have set up you blog the same way I had.

Blog Before

blog beforexml sitemap link

Blog After

blog after

xml sitemap link

So what changed? Well in the sidebar came a link to categories…”But you have a sitemap Allison, why do you also need links to categories?”

Because I didn’t think too hard about what would happen if the sitemap plugin decided to just “die”. No sitemap means nothing for the search engine spiders to follow links from and so they deduce “there’s nothing there”. Simple isn’t it? I broke one of the rules that I screech at in my day job as a manager of network technicians. “Where’s the redundancy?!?!?!” If it is important, like a path for spiders or DNS servers (you hear me India network architects *shakes fist*), make sure there is a backup route should the first option become unusable.

Open Letter To My Prospective Employers

If you want to employ me, or use my online company to perform work for you then please be aware of the following -

Dear Prospective Employer

Before you find out anywhere else,  there are pictures of me on the internet, pictures of me having fun and being silly. I have also written thousands of words of opinion and uploaded them for everyone to read and comment on. Not only on this blog either, but on Facebook, and horrors upon horrors, that dreadful beast Twitter.

I don’t want you to be afraid of going to look;  be my guest, cop an eyeful.

You might think this is rather daring. You might even think that that picture of me holding a glass of wine while I do something naughty with a naked statue would be grounds to never speak to me on professional terms again (but still think I might be kinda fun to talk to at a party). You can track that one down yourself.  You might even decide never to employ me. You know what? That is fine by me.

You see I don’t want an employer that is too short sighted to see that the world is changing and that humans (your employees) should be seen as people. That this painful period of change will eventually finish up in 5 years when it will be perfectly natural to broadcast your whole life, in glorious Technicolor to the world (well maybe not in Australia where broadband is still horrifically expensive…ooh another OPINION).

This period is similar to Victorian prudery where the word “leg” was never to be uttered, but Queen Victoria herself  liked, and gifted, drawings of naked men. Confusion reigns, and you are caught up in the middle of it. Still you want the best employees and if there is a picture of someone drinking a glass of beer online then that can easily be extrapolated to “they are a drunk who will be hungover every Monday morning” because that HAS to be the only explanation.

How about choosing employees on something radical like “can they do the work” and “will they fit in with our work culture“.  *Gasp*! I know! Who on earth would actually employ on those key points when your recruiting agency is charging you through the nose to find the person who is smart enough to have their Facebook account privacy settings set at titanium lock strength.

Next, people will be setting up fake blogs that have them helping the homeless each weekend, while keeping a real blog under a pseudonym that only the chosen few get to read (there’s a business idea what?!). What a fabulous step forward for mankind that would be, instead of open and accepting, let’s retreat back into deception.

I have been lucky to have worked for a large corporation that encourages diversity of opinion, AND the use of social media as long as I don’t try to represent them publicly (I’ll leave that to the spin PR people). I know that it is possible to be a person, a real person, and still be considered a valued employee.

Hell, the people I work for even let me manage other people! Like decide what they get paid and stuff.

I don’t give two hoots what’s on their Facebook, it’s none of my business. When I do performance reviews I am not looking, or caring, about what happens in their online lives unless I ask them why their work is suffering and they tell me it’s 60 hours of Starcraft II beta (or something).

I still hope we can do business after you know all of this about me. You can be assured I will be looking only at your suitability and “fit” with my business plans, and not how you like to enjoy yourself.

Yours Sincerely

Don’t Give Me That Crap

“Oh I can’t start my business because I don’t have a logo and I can’t afford a graphic designer”

Yeah I am cheap and occasionally nasty, but there is no excuse for NOT STARTING TODAY.

Hell for $5 you can get a logo done, covers designed, promotion done,  freaking just about anything you can think of. Great site for STARTING OUT type work (really some people are doing stuff way too cheap here but they are probably just starting out too).

I just got a decent logo done in 24 hours, and a caricature for a website, a HAT KNITTED. One day…$5. No bloody excuses

Selling a List on Flippa – By Someone Who Has Done It

I have been asked by a few people about how to go about selling a mailing list on domain and website sales platform Flippa. I can assure you that the process need not be arduous, all it takes is a little planning and ensuring everything is described clearly in your description. Let’s have a look at my real life example.

Love Letters List sale came about basically as a test vehicle for me to learn exactly was involved in selling a site + list on Flippa. The site itself was a one page landing page with only text and a sign up box that was getting its traffic from a free blog that had not been posted on in years. The work that had been put in in 2008 had meant the site still ranked highly enough that people signed up just about every day.  The site was the absolute bare minimum

Flippa List Sale

The list was almost 1800 people residing on aweber, generally seen as one of the major players with email lists (despite some recent issues and bad PR). The names on the list had received 4 newsletters and remained on the list. I had not emailed them or tried to sell anything to them, so they were a fresh market ready to be hit up by someone who was in the niche or similar.

Get Ready For Sale

Make sure you have all your figures ready for your sales description

For the last 6 months -

  • Conversion rate (how many sign up compared to how many visit the site)
  • Unsubscribe rate (how many people drop out)
  • When they unsubscribe (helpful to tell if your automated content is crap)

The other standard figures you should have are your visits to web page, where it appears in Google for its keywords, any money made from the site, and how much is spent on advertising/outgoings.

Take screenshots of all of those ready for uploading as part of the sales descriptions (make sure you blank out any personal information!).

Go to Screenr and make a quick video also covering all of those points as well and download ready for uploading.

Now write the most descriptive headline and byline you can, this MUST catch the eye of prospective buyers by telling them what is for sale, and its potential. If that is beyond you then it is worthwhile to get a copywriter to do that for you.

Lastly, and this comes down to the essence of auctions themselves. Having an auctioneer in the family (my sister) and running an antiques business for years that relied on buying and selling at auction, has added to my ideas of what should and what shouldn’t go to auction. If you are not willing to let the market dictate the value of your property then do not put it to auction. If you want to determine the value and try to find a buyer then go into private negotiation where you can say yea or nay to any offers.

This means I never put a BIN (Buy it now) amount on auctions – ever.  You will find people will demand you tell them the number…and that comes down to the old adage “he who mentions a figure first, loses”. Auction is for the market to tell YOU what it is worth, anything else is just a wanky form of selling that isn’t an auction at all. Still you can cover yourself if you are nervous about losing the lot to a $1 bid…stick in a reserve but never ever tell anyone what it is, that would be saying the first number and you don’t want to be the loser now do you?

What You Will Need To Stipulate In Your Sales Copy

Make sure you spell out clearly the list host (in this case aweber) and the domain registrar and ensure you say that the buyer must have an account with both to complete the sale. Be firm in saying that that is a condition of sale, there are a lot of new people out there that will want you to do it all for them. While help is fine, expecting you to fork out a years worth of list hosting is not part of the deal, but unless it is written it will be assumed to be the case.

Also mention that their account must be in good standing. Aweber wants to ensure you are not selling to a spammer, someone with too many complaints against them.

When the Sale Is Done

Have a message already set up for the buyer. Here is what I wrote to mine

Hi There

Congratulations on winning the site/mailing list etc.

Please deposit the $X00 USD into the paypal account

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

When I have received the funds I will initiate transfer.

As per aweber’s instructions can you also supply your aweber login details and last 4 digits of your credit card. That way I can kick off the transfer as soon as all is through.

Also do you have a GoDaddy account to move the domain, that will be easiest and quickest to get it into your hands.

Lastly could you also supply your email address to send you the zipped up doco from the AR as well as non-compete etc.

Think that is all, grats again!

Allison

On receiving the details I emailed aWeber (help@aweber.com) with my account details,  the list name, the buyer’s login details and the last 4 digits of their credit card. In less than a day the list was transferred. Simple.

Tree Change Business

Tree change is a term that is mostly recognised in Australia. Along with Sea Change, it is the movement of people from the inner cities and urban environments, to the bush (tree) or remote coastal (sea) areas. Most people who do this, dream of buying a small local business and settling down to the quiet life. Along with tranquility there is the assumption that technology is left behind and the most complicated electrical device will be an old TV with rabbit ear aerial.

Our property here in Coonabarabran is on 700 virgin bush acres where wildlife roams free and apart from the house and surrounds,  and the driveway, there are no improvements whatsoever.  Being 1.5klms off the road means no power from the grid, no phone (though somewhere in the distant past Telstra has laid copper to the house) and no town water. The house is made of mud brick and wood cut on the property, the windows and doors are reclaimed demolition remnants. The stove is solid fuel, and the water heating is solar and from the stove when it is on. The fridge is gas powered.

Sounds rather rustic, how do I run an internet business from here?

Although the power is solar and the water comes from roof catchment into tanks, I don’t feel at all deprived of technology. While I am here I work using Telstra NextG mobile internet on my HP Envy and iPhone. We also have a laptop to measure and report on solar usage and input, and we bring along a gaming PC for my guy who can’t go without playing one of his many RTS games.

It is kind of cool that I am sitting in candle light typing this post using solar power collected today. We could have lights on, but it just doesn’t seem “right” here, and I prefer bee-powered light when it gets dark. I even use my iPhone as a torch when I go to the outside toilet at night.

I am pretty sure that most people do not realise that you can live a very basic lifestyle and still have the top of the range internet and technology contact with the rest of the world.

I also wonder how many people would like to learn how to do this….

My Macbook Killer

I should have made this post back in February when I got my gorgeous new laptop.  Yes I have a Macbook Pro and as much as I tried to love it, like a red headed step-child it was just…unlovable. I really tried to make a connection with it. I loaded it up with Screenflow and other supposedly “superior” applications and went to work, and …..petered…..out. I grabbed a game or two to see if that would light the spark…nada

For months it sat under my bed, used only for watching DVDs when I wasn’t feeling well enough to get up. All that hard earned…for a DVD player?

Everyone told me it would be a life changing moment and that I would wonder how life was before it. I felt GUILTY that I had no feelings for my pomaceous partner. The nothing feeling changed to exasperation after its battery died after 56 charges. Then disgust after the replacement battery refused to charge.

When my daughter started to use it with her screen touching fingers and eating-food-while-MSNing, I didn’t bat an eyelid. The MBP was dead to me and I felt no remorse at all.

Yet I needed a laptop.  Especially for the Coming Home Seminar that was to be held in Melbourne. I could have taken the icky-sticky MBP and tried to smile through the pain, but I was determined to feel as comfortable as possible so I could take in as much information as I could.  The hunt began for the best-of-the-best-of-the-best.

My criteria were

  • quad core i7
  • HDMI compatible
  • gaming grade video card
  • upgradeable
  • 15 inches

All of my dreams came true in the form of the HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Alloy) (ewwwww HP my subconscious still screams).  I LOVE it, I slobber over it. NO ONE is allowed to touch it without my express permission (not even the cats!)

hp envy

This was the love I was looking for in the MBP, the love it’s cold brushed metal surfaces just could not provide.

The Envy is not perfect, but is any long term partner truly perfect? I say no! The 120 degree max screen tilt can make for some unusual positions in bed, and the shiny screen takes some getting used to, yet the LED screen is bright, so bright that keyboard lighting is not required.  I don’t miss the internal optical drive at all as most of my media I stream across our internal home network.

The other surprise was my first contact with Windows 7.  Not bad, not bad at all.

Of course I also bought a nice slice battery to go with it and now in every way it outlasts, out performs, and out loves any MBP on the market.
