Setting Up A Business In A Weekend

A long weekend that is.

A stray comment from Kim McGuiness (managing director of Network Central) at a networking lunch this week has prompted me to try a little experiment. Kim was talking about how she sees me on Twitter  doing my Twitter thing and how “good” I seem at using it to communicate and network.

That started me thinking about how long I have been communicating on the internet. I was more than shocked to realise it’s …*ahem*… over 20 years!   I have definitely put in my 10,000 hours and can claim my expert badge in the field. But how to make a business out of something that comes as second nature to me?

The plan is to see if I can get the business up and a customer signed up before I head back to work next Thursday. Oh and I will be working from our place in the bush which has it’s own set of challenges.

Can it be done? Let’s see!

  1. You never really know when an enquiry comes in so it’s doable. Best of luck to you!

You’ve been communicating on the internet for more than 20 years? Before it was even publicly accessible? Given the WWW and browsers didn’t even exist over 20 years ago, exactly how did you communicate back then?

Before the internet were bulletin boards and before them were Videotex ( Viatel in Australia), and alas I am old enough to have been around (and worked) on both.

Here’s some references if you are interested in Internet history.

  4. love this .. being old enough.. remember acoustic couplers. and being able to download 6 ft high naked photos of rachel welch to print out on an a3 dotmatrix printer at 30 characters per minute… photo made up of all those little x’s. — it was right about the time telstra (or whatever it was called then) brought out their new telex with a 3 inch by 1/2 lcd so that you could see what you had typed in before it printed the tape..

and before that there was eucla . pick and plug switch boards..
before my time but we have come a long way..

i must soon buy an iphone or do i wait till the ipad has a phone and 8mpixel camera built in ??
