And This Little Piggy…

Offline project number 1

This project may or may not be a money making exercise. it certainly has NO future as a passive income type of project in itself, but as a teaching/experience/niche area it has potential.

My partner and I have bought the property to which we will be slipping away to come 2010. It is 700 acres of unspoilt bush with an existing comfortable mud-brick house in place. There are various parts of the existing property that could be rolled into products

  • solar energy
  • wind energy
  • composting toilets
  • sea change, tree change

My plan though is to build a straw bale observatory on the property. Straw bale building is becoming better known amongst the eco-aware people out there, and makes sense in the climate to which our property sits.

Here is a site that is doing the whole niche marketing thing, but doing it pretty well. Their free newsletter is worth signing up for if you are interested in learning about straw bale building.

Back to the project plan for the observatory. This is a very very long term project and I will be keeping the blog updated on progress…but do not expect anything for a while

Road Maps

It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best.” W. Edwards Deming

Although my wish is to leave corporate life, I have learned a great deal from the processes that I have encountered during my years in the cubicle. One of my favourite things to do is to convert my ideas into visual records of what needs to be done.

Mind maps are my road maps for action. Let’s look at what i have put down in writing for the next couple of weeks. Road Map Mind MapCreating a visual reference is becoming more and more widely recognised as an integral tool in your business tool box. Ramping up to be a major best seller is Back of the Napkin Problem Solving which explains why it is beneficial to sketch out your issue, and how to harness your brain’s natural desire for visual input.

Back to mind mapping though. The above is a very very simple version. The large tasks have not been chunked down to the individual parts of the work that will need to be addressed. The chunking down part is VERY important. A great game to get into the habit of chunking is to work with a friend (though can be solo) and pick a random word and your partner tell you UP or DOWN and you think of the next word in the sequence of the bigger/smaller subset that your subject belongs to.

Chunking Exercise

Let’s start with the word Jupiter and chunk up

Jupiter -> Solar System -> Milky Way -> Universe

Chunk Down

Jupiter -> rings -> gas -> atoms

So working on an example from the above mind map let’s try chunking down Blogging

Niche Blog -> Topics -> Key Words -> …

Chunking Up

Niche Blog -> Communication Strategy -> Public Persona ->…

The point of chunking is that you do not lose sight of, or miss planning for the bigger picture or the minutiae. It would be a bugger if I posted 50 blog entries and did not include any of the key words or phrases I want to target. It would also be a shame if I went off the track altogether and tarnished my public persona by being someone I am not.

The goal is to remain as close as possible to the road map and measure progress and results as I go forward. So I better get cracking on getting the Vision and Mission statement up!

Begin at the End

money question markThis blog is for those people out there that are interested in the activities of someone who is slogging it out, doing what they believe they need to do, to get their life and finances in shape for jumping off of corporate life.

This blog is not to strictly make money from the readership, but I do not deny there will be affiliate links to products and services I believe in. Whether you buy them or not is entirely up to you. There will even be advertising here, shame on me!

This blog will be filled with information that I have found and/or am using to head towards the next stage in my “career”. I want to start and continue a conversation with those who also are heading in the same direction. While I am an individual, I know absolutely that you learn more from talking to many people, than you do from talking to yourself.

Here is a video excerpt that resonates with me and sums up why I know I am an entrepreneur rather than a “marketer”. I write this blog for my passions. I LOVE sharing, conversing, discovering and motivating people.

Review: How To Turn Your Million Dollar Idea Into A Reality

Title: How To Turn Your Million Dollar Idea Into A Reality

Media: Book

Author: Pete Williams

Review: Pete has invited readers of his blog to write a review of a section of his book How To Turn Your Million Dollar Idea Into A Reality in return for the chance to win some great prizes. While the opportunity to win great prizes is alway an incentive to get me to do something, the other bonus here is that I get to read some of Pete’s work before deciding whether to buy or not.

Chapter 3 Building on Other People’s Ideas is all about how other people have taken an existing idea and either improved it, or marketed it, into a wildly successful businesses. This is the sort of inspiration many people are looking, and need, for as having an “original idea” is about as rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth.

While many famous examples are included Pete would not want anyone to think that each idea will lead immediately or always, to huge amounts of success. Capitalising on the information in chapter 2, you have to select what will be the best idea to build on. No good designing a better mouse trap if everyone is happy with the one they have. There must be a market for what you are selling . Creating products that no-one wants is like masturbation, it may feel good at the time but in the end you are only f***ing yourself.

All-in-all good solid basic information that a beginner needs, and a more experienced person needs reminding about.

The Four Hour Work Week Project Manifesto

four hour work week manifestoThe definition of manifesto goes something like “a public declaration of principles, policies, or intentions”. While usually related to political statements, it really can be used in any context where strong feelings are combining with declared actions or beliefs. A manifesto is the building block on which strategies, mission statements, vision statements and tactics are created.

In the last month I have sat down and created my manifesto. It was an empowering exercise that left me feeling quite invigorated after completion. Letting yourself loose on a piece of paper writing about something you are passionate about is also a lot of fun.

If you haven’t created a manifesto yet, I can heartily recommend the process. The act of focusing on what is driving you helps feeds the fire of your passion, much like a star creates its own fuel to burn more brightly.

So What Does My Manifesto Look Like??

To truly be a manifesto your intentions need to be public and so here it is!

I hereby publicly declare to the world via the internet that I will, on December 1, 2010, leave corporate life forever. No longer will I work for anyone but myself. No longer will I be held to ransom by a large multi-national company.

I also declare that in the years, months and days leading up to December 1, 2010 I will build multiple streams of income from as many passive sources as possible. I will not be a burden on society or my partner when I leave permanent employment as I will have a satisfying, successful business of my own to support me. This will be a true business, not a day job.

I will create a professional appearance website that will never deviate from my personal moral convictions, even if this means forgoing making money. I will ensure that I offer value and integrity to my readership, never settling for second best in anything I produce.

In doing all of the above I will record everything I do so that it can be referenced by others with the same goals or similar.

I will never have a long sales letter as one of my pages, they are an abomination.

This leads me to express my opinion of those on the internet that choose to thieve, bully, trick, coerce, rip-off, or other activities that divest the less intelligent or experienced of their cash. You are filth and scum and have polluted the internet for all users. I wish to see you gone from the internet; Forever.
