Sh*t! I Nearly Forgot!

There is only about 48 hours left for qualification of my article to get into the Marketing Pilgrim’s final! If you haven’t been following along here is the skinny one what has been happening… I wrote an article with an example of how to use Social Media Leverage and entered it into the competition and then promptly got caught up in some other stuff like losing a week in a country town. The way to get into the finals is to drive as much unique traffic to the article and have them read it in its entirety, 2 minutes 30 seconds or more doing it. Easy hey?

While I am glad I have not resorted to blatant link swapping like another entrant, I have not done much more than link it in one forum and that was it. Poor effort on my behalf and even though I believe in content standing on its own two feet, I also know that reaching out to the more influential people in your network of friends and asking them to help out is probably a VERY sensible thing to do….do you hate asking favours like that? I know I do…weird.

I was reading an article about a study earlier in the week about women are MUCH less likely to put their creations out for public scrutiny on the internet.

It appears, “lack of perceived skill is holding women back from putting their creative content out there,” says Hargittai, going on other factors that may be responsible for the difference, while not measured in the study, “may relate to lack of confidence in the quality of one’s work

Yep “wah wah” I am using the gender card to explain my lack of cahonies in going out and promoting!

So my dear readers, please read the article, perform whatever wonderful social adulation you believe it deserves.

Here is the link again in case you missed it the first time :)

Positively Gorgeous!

One of the things I truly appreciate about having MS is that it taught me there is not enough time in the world, to indulge in negative thinking.  And an indulgence it is!

I am not talking about feeling depressed, that is something altogether different and something that should start with a trip to your doctor if feeling down goes longer than a few days.

I am talking about the kind of people that see the darker side of the equation every time, who prefer to be right about unpleasant happenings, than being right about the good stuff in life. Mostly it is not their fault, because “what you don’t know, you don’t know”.  They don’t know they are like this.

Think about your average office metrics.

We measure failure to reach goals and give it at a higher priority than celebrating success. We look at how many high severity problems we had, rather than how much time we had untroubled by issues. We spend all of our energy trying to minimise bad, without thinking about how much more engaging and pleasant it would be to spend that energy on increasing the good.

This negative environment gives the worker the message that it not only OK to be negative, but you need to be GOOD at being negative to get ahead…. what kind of crappy nonsense is that?!

If the office worked to improve to positive standards in the end the results will be exactly the same, but the mindset of those working to reach those targets, will be completely different.

How we think should be a conscious decision rather than a consequence of just existing. Living means taking an active part in molding who you are and how you think.

If you have read this far then I am going to hit you with this statement You are no longer permitted to be indulgently negative as you now know that this is a choice you are making.

I am not going to tell you to stop being negative, I am going to tell you to notice the times things are positive. When things are going well, pause for just a second or two and indulge in FEELING GOOD.  Smile and congratulate yourself that you remembered to do this, and think about other feel-good times.

It may feel weird in the beginning, and you may need to move the feelings from your right brain to the left by writing them down. However you get to be “in the moment” with that feeling is OK; pinch yourself to notice, count the smiles, list, record, count….but NOTICE! :)

Soon enough you will start applying those feelings to new events. Appreciation of others, gratitude in general, and being part of the whole, rather than an individual, will become more common in your daily routine. You don’t lose who you are, you expand to be more than that island battling against the odds.

You lose nothing by changing this mindset, but you gain so much

If You Can… Please Do

Scratch That Niche Itch

I remember, two years ago, while working through the Thirty Day Challenge, trying to get my head around how to brainstorm niches. My mind would immediately rate whatever I thought up as “a goer” or “not a goer” or “stupid”. I wasn’t very successful.

In the years in between I have developed an exercise to get my mind thinking in niche search terms.

Disclaimer: This is my personal way of working up niche ideas and may not work for you (if you think in different ways to me). Also, if you use any of the search terms I use here you will probably be fighting with a gazillion others who read the blog as well.

My Niche Brain Exercise Method

I set a day a “Niche Day” (as in Have A Niche Day!)

Tools: pen, paper

Time: 24 hours

From the minute I wake up I do a sense inventory. What do I see, hear, smell, touch + taste? I then continue that during the day.

To “see” niches you need to be hyper-aware of your surroundings. On Niche Day you are going to be a giant sponge absorbing everything that is around you, from the mundane to the out-of-the-ordinary. Let’s look at a few entries from my Niche Day yesterday

Hour 1

Mmmm warm doona

Shower – need hot water

Need breakfast, hungry

Get ready for Work

And so it goes on…very basic yeah?

Now break down the activities into items that you are using

doona, duvet, sheets, pillows, wardrobe, carpet, dressing gown, slippers, pyjamas, nightie, chest of drawers

hot water heater, towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, exfoliate, shower head, tiles, steam, soap scum

breakfast foods, diet, carbohydrates, balanced diet, fruit, coffee, tea, milk

hairstyle, hair dryer, makeup, jewellry, corporate clothing,  work shoes, dry cleaning, laptop bag, cell phone…..

And it goes on. A whole lot of things that your eyes normally travel over, but don’t really notice .

I went on to do the next part of the chunking down process and came up with some viable ideas, but at this stage I will not race ahead of the thirty day challenge teachings for 2008.

So get out there and start noticing things!

Learning From Mr Gadget

Last night I had the absolute pleasure of watching Mr Gadget in action on ustream as he did a vidcast reviewing various electrical gadgetry. Mr Gadget has the niche video thing down pat. Let’s break down what he is doing and you can equate it to your business, niche, show….

Authority

OK first Mr Gadget knows his stuff. He can talk authoritatively on his subject and answered questions on the fly about the product he was reviewing (even silly questions like “will that set my car airbags off” or “does it come in other colours”).

Passion

Mr Gadget obviously loves his subject matter (and who doesn’t love tech stuff?). Lots of handling of the product and holding up to the camera showing the various features. He knew what he was doing and had thoroughly checked out everything about the products before chatting about them.

Interaction

Mr Gadget interacted with his audience. He mentioned names… a lot. A very, very important thing to do when you are engaging with your market/audience.  People do not watch the new video medias and expect to be spoon-fed by a talking head. They want to be recognised and given importance as part of the production.

Everyone wants to feel special, and having your name mentioned is one way a communicator can achieve that. If you are using ustream then read your chat stream and answer directly to the person, thank them for a great question and then widen the reply to all in the room.

Great cross pollination too, with Mr Gadget offering prizes to his viewers if they posted a Haiku on his blog, and sneak peeks at some upcoming prizes he will be offering. This was done in a way that was not sale-sy or pushy, but fun and voluntary participation.

Humour

When asked if a bluetooth headset was comfortable to wear for long periods of time, Mr Gadget answered that wearing a bluetooth headset for long periods of time said negative things about ones self.  Don’t be afraid to have a bit of a laugh and joke about your product with your audience

Not a Professional

You do not need to be a professional at this thing, in fact I would think that the more professional you are, the more you distance yourself from your audience. You should cover the basics of course; good lighting, decent sound and a broadband connection good enough to upstream without issues with the quality you have chosen. Don’t go the pancake makeup and professional hairstyling…

Mr Gadget managed to forget to press record, so I can’t link you to his effort so you can do your own appraisal of his work.

Definitely catch him next week though and watch carefully what he does!

Why Work Sucks

Title – Why Work Sucks and How To Fix It

Media – Book

Authors: Cali Ressler & Jody Thompson

I had been waiting for this book to be released after reading about it on Tim Ferriss’ Four Hour Work Week Blog. As a manager in a corporate environment I have been been slowly subverting the usual ways of looking at “work”.

Think about it. (some sweeping generalisations coming but stick with me)

Offices work using the same tools, hierarchies and focus that have been in place for hundreds of years. When people moved from the land to centralised industrial work places (and we can go back further to serfdom and slavery) the fact that work was a) dangerous, b) unpleasant and c) allocated to people as young as 7, meant the need to have a supervisor standing over the worker (with a stick) to ensure they worked. Work hours were dictated by how much light was needed to complete the task, light was dictated by sunlight hours, and time suddenly became the focus of work rather than the task at hand.

No one wanted to work, they had to work.

Things have changed. The majority of tasks are no longer life threatening; technology has simplified and eased the burden of most of us. We have electric light! Telephones! Internet!

Yet we still work to the clock with a supervisor standing over us with a stick….

Why Work Sucks touches on a new way of thinking about work. ROWE (Results Only Work Environment) is the goal and using the example of Best Buy who implemented ROWE over a period of years the book covers views and ideas that came out of that change.

Despite working in a corporate environment, the idea of a ROWE is not alien to me. In fact, it seems absolutely logical, let’s see if you think the same way.

Workers in a ROWE do not work to the clock. They have very clear tasks with very clear deadlines and work they way they want to work to complete those tasks.

Using a non-work example that everyone should be able to identify with.

Remember back to high school or university when you were given a period of time to write and essay. You knew what the essay had to be about and you knew when you had to hand it in, everything else was up to you.

Knowing how you worked best, you may have knocked that essay over in the first day at the library and used the rest of your time to go out with friends. Or you may have done a little a day at a time at a coffee shop, or you may have left it all to the last minute and did it from home. If the essay was of a good enough standard then you received a good mark, it didn’t matter or depend on when or where you performed the task.

Now apply this to the work environment.

Employees are given very clear tasks with very clear expectations for what the result should be. There are no core hours, no need for desk time, no schedules.

Now I know that there will be many of you that will shake your head and say this just won’t work in your area/industry. And in some it won’t, a nurse can’t just look after her patients whenever she feels like it for example. Yet there will be parts of her job that she will be able to move to ROWE. Look at HR and performance reviews, expense paperwork, ordering of supplies etc etc….

Back to the book.

The first thing that struck me was that it is only around 200 pages long…in biggish print. Do not expect depth as the view in most parts is from several thousand feet. If you are looking at instructions on how exactly to implement you will not find it here. As a worker you might have been looking for how to create groundswell to bring this into your company, this is not covered either.

In fact it is not until the last page in the book that all becomes clear (internet marketers take note). The last page includes a link to, surprise surprise, the authors’ company CultureRX (they have become consultants) who will help you bring ROWE to your work place. I just read the longest sales letter I have ever read ….without realising it till the very end. Nice work ladies!

As an idea generator and a look at what future work places will be I heartily recommend the book. My imagination ran wild and I have left the book laying around “seductively” so my fellow managers are now discussing the ideas inside. If you an employee this would make a great gift for your manager (if they are open minded) or for a colleague (if your manager is not open minded) so you can start a movement within your workplace to a more logical way of working.
